살피꽃 마을

Blossom-Gaze Village is a place that appears in my novel "Blossom-Gaze Village"(2022). For generations, the villagers have had a habit of scrutinizing flowers that even bloom on the corners of the ground. I was writing this novel when a fellow student from the art school died by suicide. I came to conceive the protagonist, Gray, in the wake of that event. She embodies an artist who exists in a gray zone, wandering between the inexplicable and the rational.

"살피꽃 마을"은 나의 창작소설 「살피꽃 마을」(2022)에 등장하는 장소다. 이곳의 사람들은 대대로 바닥의 경계선을 따라 피어난 꽃도 살피는 습성을 지녔다. 이 소설을 쓰던 시기에 나는 미술대학 동료의 자살을 겪었다. 그 사건을 계기로 주인공 ‘회’(灰, Gray)라는 인물을 구상하게 되었다. 그녀는 회색지대에 놓인 미술하는 사람을 상징하며 불가해와 합리 사이에서 방황한다.

“Just how many things have been pronounced dead despite their lively states, only because people had simply stopped caring about them. Therefore, how many murders have we, who have nonchalantly deprived them of their lives, committed? Imaging how technically better of a murder we are to become with this “human” ability to switch life in to death, Gray felt as if she was being stabbed in the gut. It was pain that grew worse and more frequent each day- the unavoidable kind of pain as a human.”

“Worn, forgotten, and discarded objects that have fallen to the ground, breathe just like animals. I decided to call them Ground Breathers. The term breather conveys the idea of something that has received breath, which also means animal in native Korean. I like breather better than animal(動物, literally things that move) because I do not believe that the state of life depends on one’s mobility, just like how an elderly person is still very much alive. Being motionless is never equivalent to being dead and quieter days never amount to a less meaningful life.”

“낡고 잊히고 버려져 바닥에 잠시 머무르는 물건들도 동물처럼 숨을 쉰다. 그것들을 나는 ‘바닥 숨탄것’이라 부르기로 했다. ‘숨탄것’은 숨을 받은 것이란 뜻으로 동물의 순우리말이다. 움직이는 사물이란 의미의 동물(動物)보다 숨탄것이 좋았다. 노인의 생도 여전히 살아있는 삶이듯 운동성의 정도에 따라 삶이 결정된다고 생각하지 않는다. 멈춰 있다고 해서 죽었다 판정할 수 없으며, 바쁘지 않은 하루도 언제나 의미 있는 삶을 이루기 때문이다.”
