The Day a Heart Was Engraved on My Chest unfolds around the protagonist, “Pink.” Her name derives from the Pink Ribbon, the international symbol of breast cancer awareness. During the period in which I was developing this character, I had to confront the reality concealed behind that symbol. At that time, the only thing I could do was to continually read the accounts of those who had passed away from breast cancer or had survived it.
"심장 위에 하트를 새긴 날"은 주인공 ‘분홍(粉紅, pink)’을 중심으로 이루어진다. 그녀의 이름은 유방암 인식의 국제적 상징인 핑크리본(Pink Ribbon)에서 유래하였다. 이 인물을 구상하는 시기에 나는 상징 뒤에 가려진 현실을 정면으로 마주해야 했다. 당시 내가 할 수 있는 일은 유방암으로 세상을 떠난, 혹은 그것을 이겨낸 사람들의 기록을 끊임없이 읽는 것뿐이었다.

“Could it be that the heart, overworked, grew a mushroom? If so, is the mushroom head that pierced my chest there because of you?... There are things no one ever tells you, yet you come to know them in time. The moment I saw the doctor’s face, I understood. I could no longer live as you do, recklessly wasting my health. Before ever knowing what it means to be young and romantic, I had to surrender everything to survival. You and I, whose lives now diverge as heaven and hell, can we still, somehow, dance together?”

“정말 심장이 과부하 되어서 버섯이 생긴 걸까. 그렇다면 가슴으로 뚫고 들어온 버섯 머리는 너 때문일까.…살다 보면 아무도 말해주지 않지만, 저절로 알게 되는 일들이 있다. 의사의 표정을 보자마자 나는 깨달았다. 이제 나는 너처럼 건강을 탕진하며 살 수 없다는 것을. 낭만에 취한 청춘이 되어보기도 전에 모든 것을 건강에 양보하며 살아가야 한다는 것을. 앞으로의 삶이 천국과 지옥처럼 다른 우리가, 여전히, 함께, 춤을 출 수 있을까?”
